Multi-disciplinary Master's Program in Demography
120 ECTS (2 years)
The demography unit at the Department of Sociology coordinates an multi-disciplinary two-year Master’s Program in Demography in cooperation with the departments of Economics, Economic History, Human Geography and Statistics.
The program is designed for students with a completed Bachelor’s degree (fil. kand.) in social sciences (including statistics), biology or public health. It provides students with skills for independent analyses of demographic phenomena and prepares them for work as professional demographers and for doctoral studies in demography at Stockholm University or in academic programs throughout Europe as well as in the United States. Students registering for the master’s program may subsequently elect to complete only a one-year multidisciplinary magister degree in demography.
The aim is to prepare students for demographic research careers at an advanced level. Students will learn to describe and analyse population development in various social contexts and time periods. The programme consists of a 30-credit thesis (to be written in demography or in a field of the participating departments with specialization in demography) and 90 credits coursework, of which 30 credits to be obtained in methodology. About one-third of the total credits are to be taken in demography.
Educational entry requirements: Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, biology or public health.
Specific requirements: Matematik C; IB: SL-studies; English: AS-level or equivalent (for details see application information).

Course overview of courses to be included in the Multi-disciplinary Master's Program
The core courses are mandatory in the Multi-disciplinary Master's Program, and contain a total of 37.5 ECTS credits.
Elective courses comprise 52.5 ECTS credits. Of these elective courses, 37.5 ECTS credits must be received from courses that have a clear demographic component and are offered by the departments that participate in the Multidisciplinary Master's Programme in Demography or CHESS. The remaining course work consists of 15 ECTS credits that can be taken in other elective courses offered by participating departments and CHESS. In total, at least 30 credits of the Master’s Programme are to be taken in research methods and analytical techniques.
In line with the multidisciplinary nature of our program, we encourage students to take courses in the affiliated departments. Students may choose to complete a Demography Master’s thesis with a focus on one of these disciplines and receive specialized supervision accordingly. Courses included in the Master’s degree should be at an advanced level, but a maximum of 15 ECTS on the basic level will be accepted. Table 1 synthesizes information on the programme requirements and lists the courses that are part of the programme or that we recommend.
Finally, a Master's thesis of 30 ECTS credits is to be written in the main field.
For more information about the non-mandatory courses, see the suggested courses in the Master’s Programme Handbook (pdf.). Please note that the overview below is subject to constant change. Always consult http://sisu.it.su.se before making any decisions.
